It works as a pump to push refrigerant through the AC to remove water from the air and then chill it. It's a relatively hardy component, but it can wear out with time, and a worn compressor will pump slower than it previously did. This slowdown can prevent the air from cooling sufficiently before it's blown into your cabin. If your AC only blows cold air when you hit the gas, your compressor is probably damaged. The compressor is connected to the compressor pulley, which spins as the serpentine belt passes over it, and this powers the compressor. When you speed up, the belt moves faster, causing the pulley to spin faster and forcing the worn compressor to work harder and supply cold air.
